Mobile coverage issues continue to decrease: TIO

Complaints drop to three-year low

It appears mobile coverage issues are on the mend, with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman reporting that complaints regarding mobile coverage fell to a three-year low in the fourth quarter of 2013.

According to its most recent TIO Talks paper, a total of 2812 complaints were received between October and December last year, marking a 30 per cent drop from the previous quarter.

This type of complaint is at its lowest since the third quarter of 2010 (July through September), when the TIO recorded 2052 coverage issues.

“Complaints about mobile coverage have more than halved over the past six months,” Ombudsman Simon Cohen, said.

“It is a positive story for an industry that has very publicly committed to doing better by its customers.”

Total mobile services complaints amounted to 18,234, down 4.9 per cent compared to the July to September 2013 quarter. Drop outs and slow data speeds are among the reduced figures.

The decrease in mobile-related issues is in line with the overall reduction of reports received by the TIO. Consumers made 33,351 new complaints between October and December last year, 6.7 per cent fewer than at the same time in 2012.

In December, the TIO reported telecommunications complaints hit a five-year low, following a 16 per cent quarterly drop to 35,756 between July and September 2013; mobile, landline and Internet services complaints all dropped.
