Local demand strong for 802.11ac: UXC Connect

ICT infrastructure vendor sees potential implementation of new wireless standard in various industries

Australian demand for the next generation Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, is growing, according to UXC Connect.

Enterprise mobility and wireless practice manager at the ICT infrastructure vendor, Denise Carson, attributes the growth to customers acknowledging the new specification as “the way forward.”

“Because the standard has been endorsed by the Wi-Fi Alliance and all major manufacturers are introducing 802.11ac enabled clients, it is the fastest growing Wi-Fi standard to date,” she said.

UXC Connect is involved in the Australian Wi-Fi space as a partner of networking vendor, Aruba Networks.

Carson said Aruba is one of the first vendors to push enterprise class products with the new specification, with a focus on solving sticky client problems and the ability to prioritise application performance for business critical applications like voice and video.

The need for speed

UXC Connect is currently experiencing demand for the new Wi-Fi standard in the higher education market.

“Especially where students are bringing multiple 802.11ac enabled devices onto a campus and want to do high bandwidth activities like streaming videos, making voice and video calls,” Carson said.

The new specification has also been implemented at healthcare installations to meet the demand for proliferating smart devices.

“Doctors and nurses want to use this type of technology more often because it improves patient outcomes, and increases efficiency and productivity,” Carson said.

In addition to inclusion at campuses and hospitals, Carson said the faster speed of the 802.11ac standard make it “very relevant” in retail, stadiums, and in large corporate scenarios.
