Ookla Net Index delivers verdict on Australian Internet speed results show Australia in 48th and 96th spot for download and upload speed, respectively


Internet metrics company, Ookla, has ranked Australia 48th for download speed and 96th for upload speed in its most recent Net Index which covers tests recorded on from June 3, 2011, to December 2, 2013.

Based on the tests, the average Australian download speed is 14.36 megabits per second (Mbps), equivalent to 1.795 megabytes per second (MBps). This places Australia on par with Slovenia and the Isle of Man. Meanwhile, Hong Kong enjoys poll position at 70.57Mbps or 8.821MBps, followed by Singapore and Romania.

The average upload speed in Australia is recorded at 2.84Mbps (0.355MBps), similar to that of Nepal and Uganda. Hong Kong leads the way in this category as well at 58.2Mbps or 7.275MBps, with South Korea and Singapore closing out the top three.

The Victorian suburb of Lilydale leads the way for download speed in Australia, recording an average speed of 50.75Mbps (6.344MBps) based on 56 tests (of 1002 total IP addresses). This is followed by Ballarat (1592 tests) and Warrawee (236 tests), which sit at 40.71Mbps (5.089MBps) and 39.48Mbps (4.935MBps), respectively.

The top three for upload speeds are Lilydale (41.29Mbps; 5.161MBps), Heathmont (15.34Mbps; 1.918MBps), and Normanhurst (13.89Mbps; 1.736MBps).

These values indicate the rolling mean throughput over the past 30 days where the mean distance between the client and the server is less than 300 miles (482.8 kilometres).

Note that the values presented by Ookla rely on users visiting the web site and taking a test. This means they do not represent an overall average of all services available in each nation, and do not include all IPs.
