Big Data set for 'substantial growth' in Australian market: Oracle

Oracle Big Data specialist helps companies find early use cases

Big Data solutions are set to ramp up in the Australian market as businesses discover early use cases, by delving into the swamp of data which is growing by the day.

Oracle Big Data Solutions specialist Vicky Falconer told ARN there would be substantial growth in the next 12 months as Australia catches up with the US market.

Falconer said, while Big Data was broad, she was constantly seeing customers investigating the technologies.

“I am already seeing customers doing things in Hadoop and real-time analytics, but my expectation is it’s going to grow,” she said.

“I expect to see substantial growth in the next 12 months.”

Falconer said there was a view that Australia was 12-18 months behind the US market, while Australian companies were still trying to figure out what it means for them.

“A really big part of the process is finding a quick way to help companies figure out what those early use cases are,” she said.

“But there is no point doing any of that, if you don’t have sponsorship from the top down.

“The organisation needs to have executive level sponsorship to extract value for the business.”

Oracle has recently launched an online self-assessment helping companies identify how "Hadoop ready" they are, along with a Big Data kick starter program to help companies which haven’t started their Big Data journey.

This will help companies identify and undertake projects that have the potential to return quick value in order to gain more skills and understanding of the technologies.

Falconer said it really was very different across industries.

“It’s really about understanding this data and where it might begin to help them which is the challenging part for organisations,” she said.

“The most interesting one is the big data quick start program. The idea is to help find a use case for that customer. Organisations do not have a good understanding of the assets that they have."

Oracle has also recently launched its Big Data Appliance, which brings customers significant cost savings compared to building an in-house Hadoop cluster – up to 39 per cent.

According to a company statement, with the increased storage capacity and enhanced software capabilities of Oracle Big Data Appliance, customers can further reduce their total cost of ownership.
