In today’s “hyperconnected world," businesses should think differently, according to Akamai Global Products vice-president, Neil Cohen.
“What is happening in the hyperconnected world is that more and more people continue to hook up to the Internet,” he said.
As a result, Cohen said a new approach in terms of the way businesses engage with people in their home life, as well as in their work life, is needed.
Being able to adapt will be particularly important in the next decade, as Cohen expects there to be at least a doubling in the Internet population.
“Additionally, we’re expecting the average number of devices per Internet user to explode as well,” he said.
Akamai is currently predicting that the average Internet user is going to have 10 connected devices by the end of the decade.
“That really changes the way businesses need to think about the way that consumers and workers want to interface and work with the Web,” Cohen said.
Mobile device adoption
In the last five years alone, the global Internet user base has grown from 1.3 billion to 2.4 billion, and the number of connected devices worldwide has quadruped from two to eight billion.
As for what is driving the hyperconnected world today, Cohen said a lot of that can be attributed to the proliferation of smartphones and tablets.
“You’re seeing that happen at a very rapid pace over the last few years, but that’s only the beginning,” he said.
Beyond smartphones and tablets, Cohen said we are reaching an age where “pretty much anything” can and will be connected to the Internet.
This extends to cars, appliances, wearable computing, and anything else that may offer connectivity as a feature.
“As a result, there is and will be a tremendous amount of opportunities to be able to reach those hyperconnected users to all aspects of their life,” Cohen said.
