Brightpoint tunes in to Sony ring tones

Mobile phone distributor, Brightpoint, has signed an exclusive deal with Sony Music for ring tones featuring the tunes of its leading artists.

Available in polyphonic or mono versions, the ring tones will be sold on cards. The polyphonic versions allow users to choose two out of five ring tones while the mono gives a choice of five from 10.

Current themed cards include chart toppers, rock classics, pop tunes, urban hits, film themes and superstars. Delta Goodrem, Shakira, Oasis and Michael Jackson are among the artists featured.

Once purchased, the polyphonic ring tones are downloaded via GPRS while the mono versions are sent via SMS.

“Offering ring tones from a leading music company means consumers can be confident they are legal and of a high standard,” Brightpoint Asia- Pacific president, Bruce Thomlinson, said. “It will open up the market to consumers of all ages.”

Artist-specific cards are expected to be released in time for Christmas.

TrueTone versions, which play a 30-second clip from an original song, will hit the shelves early next year.

“Mobile phones will become the portable music player of choice for savvy consumers,” director of digital services for Sony Music Australia, Gavin Parry, said.

“The ring tone market already exceeds the CD single market in the UK and we expect the same will occur here within 12 months.”
