3Com unveils two-way cable modem system

3Com this week unveiled its bidirectional cable access system, which the vendor said will enable the delivery of broadband communications and will support future services such as voice over IP and videoconferencing.

The Cable Access system -- which is based on the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification -- includes 3Com's Total Control Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), network management software for the head end, and the US Robotics Cable Modem CMX.

According to officials, CMTS is built on the Total Control remote-access platform, which should make it easier for cable operators to deliver and manage high-speed digital services. In addition, the CMX cable modem is designed to be easy to install and use, and supports throughput as fast as 38Mbps downstream and as fast as 10Mbps upstream.

The system is currently being used by miscellaneous cable operators in the US, Canada, Argentina, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, and Taiwan.
