CheckPoint boosts security management

In a potential boon to security service providers, CheckPoint Software Technologies will announce software that will better enable Internet service providers to centrally manage network security policies for corporate customers.

CheckPoint Provider-1 software supplies ISPs with a tool for remote network security management, said Zohar Alon, Provider-1 product manager at CheckPoint. Policies for databases, virtual private networks, and other components of an enterprise can be managed from a single location, he said.

Outsourcing benefits may result from the technology, said Sam Alunni, an analyst and president of Sterling Research.

"[A managed security service] allows an IT manager to lower personnel costs, leaving the day-to-day operations of the firewall to the service provider," Alunni said.

With Provider-1, as many as 25 corporate customers can be allocated per service provider administrator, as opposed to the seven-customer limit of Check Point's FireWall-1 firewall technology.
