Apple's new entry level iPhone 5C is colourful, but more expensive than expected in Australia.

The iPhone 5C is available in white, red, blue, yellow and green colour variants.

Apple says the device is "beautifully, unapologetically plastic", though the case is technically constructed from hard-coated polycarbonate.

The company claims you won't see any seams, part lines, or joins on the iPhone 5C.

The iPhone 5C is virtually identical to the current iPhone 5 internally. It has the same 4in Retina display, uses the same A6 processor, and comes with the same 8-megapixel rear camera.

However, Apple has upgraded the front-facing Facetime HD camera, giving it larger pixels and backside illumination.

Apple claims that the iPhone 5C supports "more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world." The phone also has a slightly larger internal battery than the iPhone 5.

Apple will sell its own custom case for the iPhone 5C, made from soft-feeling silicone.

The cases, priced at $39 each, come in a different range of colours from the iPhone 5C (blue, green, pink, yellow, black and white) and have circular cut-out patterns on the back so you can see the colours of the phone underneath.

The Apple iPhone 5C launches on Friday, 20 September in Australia and will be sold by all three major Australian telcos: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

The iPhone 5C will also be sold outright through Apple's Retail Stores, and through the Apple online store.

The iPhone 5C will come in 16GB and 32GB models, with Australian pricing starting at $739 for the 16GB model, and $869 for the 32GB variant.
