Huawei to teach Brisbane undergraduates

Three-week scholarship program launched in unison with Lord Mayor of Brisbane

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk, and telecommunications company, Huawei, have launched a scholarship program to allow local students to study and learn with the vendor in China.

While visiting Huawei’s global headquarters in Shenzhen, Quirk said Brisbane is home to a wealth of ICT students suitable for the company’s three-week undergraduate work experience program which includes hand-on training and workshopping in Huawei’s innovation centres and laboratories.

“As Australia’s new world city, Brisbane needs to be strongly engaged with Asia and continue to look for opportunities in the burgeoning region,” Quirk said. “One of my priorities is connecting Brisbane with international students for mutual economic growth through lifelong connections.”

A local Huawei spokesperson told ARN the eligibility criteria has not yet been determined, but will be announced once the City of Brisbane and Huawei Australia liaise with local universities. The number of participating students will also be established in the near future.

According to Huawei Australia corporate affairs director, Jeremy Mitchell, the vendor employs more than 70,000 research and development engineers worldwide, and that Brisbane-based students would now be able to learn from Huawei’s innovation centre in China.

The launch of the scholarship program coincides with the opening of Huawei’s new office in Brisbane which employs nine staff.

“Over 50 per cent of Australians are already using a Huawei product for some part of their telecommunications need, so this is a great time to grow our local operations and open our first office in Brisbane,” Mitchell said.
