Gathered at Dick Smith’s head office at Chullora on August 22, 110 weird and wacky vehicles set off on Australia’s biggest motoring event, the Variety Dick Smith Bash, to raise much needed money for Variety – the Children’s Charity.
The Bash’s infamously entertaining participants, which this year includes some Smurfs, Shrek, and Batman and Robin, will be helped along their way for the first time with a free Navman from Dick Smith, to ensure no-one goes astray.
Testing new technology, the Dick Smith team will be trialling the SatSleeve on the road; a new device that simply attaches to an iPhone, and with a free app, turns it into a satellite phone so the team will have mobile coverage in even the most remote locations.
The Bash finishes in Ballarat on August 31. The teams will make pit stops at 17 regional and remote towns across New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria throughout the 4,425 kilometre adventure including Manildra, Nyngan, Innamincka, Peterborough, Mildura and Horsham.
In addition to the joy that the colourful convoy brings to each town, the Bashers (participants) deliver much needed resources to local schools, including sporting equipment, play equipment or special needs/medical equipment, as well as a $500 Dick Smith voucher.
