Platform as a Service expected to continue rapid growth: Red Hat

Claims PaaS will be the next big model in Cloud computing

After seeing strong growth in 2013, Platform as a Service (PaaS) adoption is expected to continue to grow rapidly, with 2013 and 2014 predicted to see a huge spike for Australian companies investing in PaaS, according to Red Hat.

According to Gartner, PaaS adoption is expected to increase from three per cent in to 43 per cent in enterprises by 2015, according to Gartner

Red Hat middleware business unit manager, Ben Henshall, said “When you think of Cloud computing and what it means for a business...for some businesses and government agencies, it is a complete outsourcing of hardware needs through Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). For others, it’s only about using applications, like email or CRM over the web, which is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)."

According to him businesses are now increasingly turning to the middle of the Cloud-computing spectrum to support their broader needs; building and deploying bespoke applications and integration solutions on a cloud architecture.

"This is Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and, with its multiple benefits, it will be the next big model in cloud computing,” he said.

According to Henshall, some of the benefits of implementing PaaS are:

- It helps by rapidly provisioning software development environments in seconds rather than weeks and months. Typically, IT departments takes weeks to "provision" a new application development environment for their developers to start coding and testing, PaaS takes away this time, cost and complexity.

- PaaS helps to consolidate systems more easily across scattered workforces - be they locally and internationally based. For instance, as business and government agencies continue to outsource their IT application development services or have multiple development teams dispersed throughout the country, PaaS provides everyone the same development environment regardless of location in a highly secure and rapid way. .

- PaaS can help developers not just create new applications but also re-engineer legacy ones faster, helping IT teams spend more time testing applications and ideas that support business goals instead of focusing on infrastructure-related tasks.

- PaaS vendors provide the tools, technology and experience to make the PaaS stable, secure and reliable, thus avoiding unplanned development bottlenecks, security breaches and outages. That means the IT department can concentrate on improving performance, scalability and mobility and ultimately taking advantage of new technologies that support business growth
