IT gets big slice of Victorian budget

The Victorian Government has allocated more than two-thirds of its $268.6 milllion IT budget to education and training.

The $188 million spend includes 370 extra placements for information, communication and technology apprentices and trainees plus $19 million to upgrade TAFE's IT infrastructure.

This is in addition to $30 million over the next three years to develop an IT strategy for the health sector and plans to move the land titles register online.

Other projects include: $4 million to redevelop the Victorian Government's Web site; $12 million to establish an IT support centre for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment; $3 million to install videoconferencing and Internet access infrastructure at 30 regional centres; $1.5 million to replace Treasury's forward-estimates system with a Web-enabled integrated budget management system, and $4 million to develop an online gateway into e-government.

IT expenditure in this year's budget is one of the largest by a state government and Victoria's Treasurer John Brumby said it is a "downpayment on the future".
