Optus takes 4G to Wollongong

Also upgrades 3G network

Optus has switched on 4G services at five mobile sites in central Wollongong, kicking off extensive network upgrades and expansions in the greater Illawarra area in the next six months.

This also includes upgrades to its 3G network.

“Our customers have told us the three key things they want from their network provider are data speeds that meet their needs, strong reception in their homes, and reliable coverage when on the go,” Optus vice-president of corporate and regulatory affairs, David Epstein, said. “To deliver on our customers’ expectations in these three key areas, we’ve committed to upgrading many of our existing mobile sites in Wollongong and surrounding areas.

"We’re also developing new sites that will enhance the capacity and reach of mobile coverage for our customers.”

During the next six months, 4G coverage will be progressively expanded to customers across Shellharbour, Calderwood, Warilla, Kiama, Fern Hill, Shell Cove, Figtree, Unanderra, Blackbutt, Woonona, Port Kembla, Maddens Plains and West Dapto.

Optus has recently upgraded more than 4000 3G sites across metro and rural areas.

The next phase sees 41 Optus mobile sites across the Illawarra region upgraded to provide better mobile coverage for customers with compatible 3G dual-band devices.

During the next 18 months, the telco plans to activate new sites with both 4G and upgraded 3G coverage in areas such as Albion Park Water Reservoir, Gwynneville, Primbee, Austinmer, Kanahooka, Russell Vale, Berkeley North, Koonawarra, Scarborough, Bulli Station, Lakelands, Thirroul, Cobblers Hills East, Mt Ousley, Unanderra South, Coledale, Mt St Thomas North, Warilla, East West Link, North Wollongong, Windang, Fairy Meadow, Ocean Park, Yallah, Farmborough Heights and Port Kembla.
