Adobe opens Web services publishing door

Adobe Systems on Monday plans to introduce a Web services-enabled version of its AlterCast imaging server software aimed at speeding and simplifying the process of publishing content on the Web.

Adobe AlterCast software is designed to automate the production and workflow of Web images and graphics. For example, AlterCast can resize a picture or manipulate layers of text dynamically.

The addition of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) support to AlterCast will allow developers to access the software functionality over the Internet using Java or .Net APIs, which will enable dynamic Web image updating and production from a single command, according to Adobe officials.

"Web services is a huge opportunity to make it easier to access AlterCast, particularly when it is located on a different server than the application," said Gregg Brown, group product manger for Adobe AlterCast.

Previously, AlterCast functionality could be invoked via Java, Com, and Perl. "We took those APIs, snipped them, and inserted the option for a Web service definition with SOAP in between the API and the Web service," he said.

The biggest benefits of Web services functionality are cross-platform and cross-network support, simplified image updating, and the ability to provide the AlterCast server over a company's internal network, Brown said.

Moreover, the Web services update can ease the implementation of AlterCast by adding remote execution functionality regardless of the programming language used, Adobe officials said.

The Adobe AlterCast Web services update is free to customers and available now via download. The offering supports the major industry platforms for Web services including Sun ONE (Open Net Environment), IBM, Microsoft .Net, and Oracle 9iAS.
