Tripp Lite has appointed Microtech as its Australian distributor as part of the UPS vendor's plans to ramp up its presence in Australia.
Don Seaton, Tripp Lite's Asia-Pacific manager, said Microtech is currently the vendor's only distributor in Australia. "I may look at a retail chain down the track for our smaller UPSs for the [small office/home office] market, but at this stage I'd prefer to go with Microtech because one of the things I'm trying to do is support local companies in the country."
Seaton emphasised what he sees as the importance of supporting the local infrastructure. "You don't win kudos by going and getting outside organisations to sell your product into a country," he said.
Tripp Lite is also looking at running training seminars for resellers from February until June/July.
Seaton said there was the possibility that assembly of some Tripp Lite products may be carried out in Australia in the future, although he added this was still a "big maybe".
"We're here to make money like everybody else, but we're also here to recognise that we've got a responsibility to the local market."
And Colin Mead, managing director at Microtech, believes there are good margins for resellers in these products, something he feels is important so they get "a nice bite of the cherry".
