SAP, TopTier form SAP Portals

German software developer SAP has announced the formation of a new company, SAP Portals. The company will employ 700 people and be dedicated to the development and marketing of Web portals, SAP said in a statement.

The new company will be headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and have development centres in Germany, and Israel, SAP said.

Three units of SAP will form the new company: TopTier Software (about to be acquired by SAP); the business unit comprising MySAP Workplace and MySAP Business Intelligence Solutions; and eSAP GmbH, an SAP subsidiary specialising in enterprise portals and e-business, SAP said.

The chief executive officer (CEO) of SAP Portals will be Shai Agassi, current CEO of TopTier.

In a separate statement, Yahoo said that it has reached an agreement with SAP to form a new enterprise portal. Yahoo will provide the Internet platform while SAP will provide e-business applications and services. SAP Portals will provide content for business users.
