Motorola to detail next generation chip

Motorola will unveil details about the next-generation PowerPC G4 processor family at the Microprocessor Forum in California this month.

The company will not have any actual chips running in test machines at the show, according to a source within the company, but they will be discussing the first implementations and further details of the G4 chip.

Wide-scale production of the chip will not begin until next year. The chip will feature a new microarchitecture, both 32-bit and 64-bit flavours, and contain as many as 50 million transistors.

Motorola's implementation will include the AltiVec multimedia extensions, which are not currently supported by PowerPC partner IBM, which is focusing on clock speeds. by Jeff Walsh
