HP and SAP team up on supply-chain management

Hewlett-Packard (HP) and SAP AG have teamed up to offer supply-chain management solutions to large enterprise customers, the companies announced Wednesday.

HP and SAP plan to offer mySAP Supply Chain Management software components with Hewlett-Packard hardware and middleware for global enterprises in the technology, consumer products, automotive, aerospace and defense, engineering, and construction industries, according to company officials. The companies have created global solution centers to pre-configure and pre-test components in an effort to offer customers easier and faster implementation. The relationship is an expansion of a similar alliance where the two companies teamed up to market SAP's R/3 ERP (enterprise resource planning) software.

Because integration can be such a stumbling block for many enterprises seeking to provide back-end system visibility to their trading partners, an integrated supply-chain management platform will differentiate the companies in an increasingly crowded supply-chain management market, said Sanford Markin, SAP vice president for supply-chain management.

"The more you can buy or acquire from a single source, the integration issues become less of a problem down the road," he said.

Supply-chain management solutions are designed to make supply-chain processes and systems more visible, thus allowing companies to trim inventory, streamline logistics, and optimise the efficiency of their workforces. For example, BMW needs the flexibility and visibility to track information from its global suppliers in real time, said Guenter Klamer, senior vice president of IT and logistics at BMW. SAP and HP together will offer the company a supply-chain solution and infrastructure that meets the company's "always-on" needs, he said. As a result, company officials plan to achieve much better visibility into key business metrics and to anticipate market demand, he added.
