Victorian-based acute health services provider, Western Health, has selected to deploy Veeam’s Backup and Replication 6.5 to improve its virtual infrastructure data protection and enable reliable backup capabilities alongside effective disaster recovery.
Veeam is a backup, replication and virtualisation management software vendor.
Western Health, which services western metropolitan Melbourne, employs about 6000 staff across its three hospitals, two aged care facilities, and a day hospital facility. It operates 24 hours a day.
The organisation switched to Veeam as its previous backup tool presented various limitations, impacting its ability to optimise effective management of its IT environments. For example, multiple agents on the previous solution caused unnecessary restarts of virtual machines whenever there were upgrades. It also had to be routed via the backup server, causing bottlenecks in recovery.
“Our previous backup solution required restarts of an entire host, even if a fault was within a single VM, causing that host to miss that week’s backup window, which clearly presented significant risks,” Western Health systems and software solutions manager, Cameron McBride, said.
According to Veeam, Western Health required a solution that was simply to use and designed specifically for virtualised environments, therefore facilitating fast recovery. It also needed to support Microsoft Hyper-V.
“We chose Veeam because it is built specifically for virtualised environments and because it provides fast, flexible and reliable recovery of virtualisation applications and data,” McBride added.
