MS closes online developer store

Microsoft has acknowledged that it shut down a Web site for an online Microsoft Developers Store to look into a possible security vulnerability that could compromise customer information. The alleged security problem involved a defective script used in the creation of the Web site, according to a posting by a developer at the Web site. The script allegedly had a hole allowing access by an intruder, who could then obtain customer information from the site. The store is a site used by software developers to download product betas, evaluation kits and other information. A message posted by Microsoft on the Web site says the "Microsoft Developer Store is temporarily unavailable."

Palm launches Bluetooth kit

Palm's operating system division has launched a test version of a software development kit (SDK) for Bluetooth, allowing developers to make a start on building applications that work with the wireless networking standard. Palm hasn't yet revealed when the first devices using the Bluetooth chip will hit the market, but the company now has both hardware and software kits available for developers. Bluetooth technology would let Palm users connect wirelessly to other Bluetooth-enabled devices, including mobile phones, printers and other Palm computers. Connecting to a mobile phone would allow users to send and receive e-mail wirelessly, using the phone as a modem.

Virtual computing

Software development tool distributor Microway has announced the availability of VMWare Workstation 3.0, a product that allows multiple operating systems to run on "virtual machines" that sit on the same hardware.

The product allows software developers to develop and test on multiple operating systems or versions of operating systems. The software is also popular with software test and quality assurance engineers, computer training organisations and technical support organisations.
