Creative unveils its first external Sound Blaster

Creative has launched the Sound Blaster Extigy, the first external sound blaster in Creative's history. The Extigy offers 24-bit 96kHz multi-channel audio playback and 100dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), enhancing audio for digital music, DVD movies and games via an external device that connects to the notebook or desktop through a USB port. Creative has shipped more than 150 million Sound Blaster audio cards and hopes the new device will appeal to the burgeoning multimedia notebook market as well as desktops.

The Extigy includes EAX Advanced HD technologies with enhancement features such as Audio Clean-Up, Time Scaling, DREAM and EAX Advanced HD audio effects. Computer gamers can use the Extigy with the hundreds of games that incorporate EAX 1.0 and 2.0 technology.

The unit also functions as a standalone Dolby digital decoder for a set-top DVD player or with a video-gaming console or audio devices such as a digital audio player, CD player, mini-disc player or cassette player. The rear panel provides analog connectors for an amplifier or a speaker system.

The Sound Blaster Extigy will be available in Australia and New Zealand in mid-February for an estimated retail price of $A399.
