CITRIX SYNERGY ’13: IT needs to be empowered, says Sallam

Claims the humanisation of devices enabled the smart device boom

Along with the digitisation of humanity, there needs to be an empowerment of IT solutions and technologies, according to Citrix client virtualisation chief technology officer and product strategy vice-president, Ahmed Sallam.

He was speaking at the Citrix’s Synergy 2013 conference, held in Los Angeles.

Sallam said the humanisation of devices has enabled in a proliferation of smart devices and more devices per person.

“You have a machine at home, you have a machine in the office, you have a machine for on-the-go and you have devices for all other times. And all these devices are connected to each other,” he said.

Sallam mentioned that market disruptions such as the notion of an app store, the growth of Android, consumerisation, as well as increasing use of open source has also added to the uptake of mobile devices.

“Human factors – such as the move to the Cloud – has also changed the way you choose a device, use the device and so on,” he mentioned.

Moving forward, Sallam suggested that businesses should adopt four key practices in jumping on the bandwagon of mobile change:

  • Collaborate mobile technology with Big Data technologies
  • Contribute to social media
  • Offer employees the freedom of mobile choice in BYOD and
  • A play towards Cloud computing

Sallam also suggested that businesses should catch on the trend of virtualisation as he claimed many of the larger companies are already taking advantage of it.

“Virtualisation is becoming rampant. There will be no device, no machine that will not have some form of virtualisation embedded in it. We forsee growth in software-defined storage and that’s what businesses should work towards.

“In total, businesses need an end-to-end enterprise desktop mobility system and take it to the Cloud. They need to take advantage of the new world of virtualisation and be prepared to lead in it,” he added.
