Barracuda Networks has upped the amount of storage on its free Copy.com service from 5GB to 15GB.
The move is said to be inspired by Google’s announcement that it is unifying storage across its products.
Barracuda Networks product manager, Alon Yaffe, said the online storage site is approaching half a million users worldwide after 2.5 months on the market.
“We are on track to have over one million users in the first six months of launching the service,” he said.
In countries like Taiwan, Yaffe said Copy had approximately 50,000 users join up in 48 hours.
“In that period, it became one of the top ten web sites in Taiwan without any marketing,” he said.
Yaffe expects a lot of demand for Copy following the increase in capacity, because “users like to get free storage.”
He adds that there are also very few barriers for companies to adopt it.
“The only real barrier we see in Australia is that we don’t have a local datacentre, but that will get fixed,” Yaffe said.
Once Copy gets a local datacentre provider, Yaffe expects the site to make further inroads into the Australian market.
“What you’re going to see is us offering primary storage in the Cloud for customers in Australia with the data located domestically, and our plans are all capacity based,” he said.
“So you can buy half a terabyte of Copy storage for $1000 a year for as many users as you want.”
If a company wants more storage, they can pay for it under a pricing model that Yaffe said will be “very predictable.”
“Customers will not have to worry about adding users,” he said.
“They have a certain capacity that they license and that is it.”
As for how adoption of Copy in Australia will compare to the rest of the world, Yaffe expects it to be in line with what Barracuda has seen in the rest of the world.
“It basically starts with the consumers,” he said.
“Because it is free, it is a service that has a zero barrier to enter.”
Despite the free nature of the site, Yaffe said Copy has been designed to offer good functionality for the user to synch information and share it with friends.
“Now we’re providing 15GB of free storage for every user, and anyone can sign up and use it,” he said.
Once Copy has a local base of users, and Yaffe expects it will take off “very quickly,” adoption will move into the workplace.
“That is what we’re seeing in the US,” he said.
