Inmarsat acquires TC Comms ahead of global broadband launch

Acquisition to focus on Inmarsat’s global government and enterprise business units

British satellite telecommunications solutions provider, Inmarsat, has acquired Auburn (Sydney) based specialist company, TC Communications.

Inmarsat will integrate TC Comms into its existing Australian operations with a particular focus in supporting its global government and enterprise business units.

“The acquisition of TC Comms brings strong VSAT, Wideband Global Satcom system, aviation and solutions skills to Inmarsat’s global government and enterprise business units,” Inmarsat global government president, Andy Start, said.

“These skills are particularly important to drive the take-up of Global Xpress in the enterprise and government markets following the launch of the first satellite later this year.”

Global Xpress is a global superfast broadband service which Inmarsat said will offer global coverage from a single operator and performance of up to 50Mbps. It will be delivered by the Inmarsat-5s satellites, with global coverage scheduled for the end of 2014 following a 2013 launch.

As part of the acquisition, TC Comms chief executive officer (CEO), Todd McDonnell, has been appointed to the role of Inmarsat global government solutions vice-president. He will cover sales and operations of the direct arm of Inmarsat’s global government business in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the Netherlands.

“We see this acquisition as a very natural growth strategy for TC Comms,” McDonnell said. “Inmarsat brings the financial capital and reach to be able to fully exploit the solutions and expertise TC has built up over the past 20 years in the satellite industry.”

“This move will enable us to share and replicate our successful, multi-pronged model with Inmarsat provider throughout the region.”
