According to The Sunday Times, a credible (ahem!) London tabloid, Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world.
And just to rub it in, Gates' number one spot has been taken by a reseller. Sam Walton, American retail magnate and owner of the international retail chain Wal-Mart, is now the richest man in the world.
The tech stock crumble hit Gates where it hurts most - the value of his shares in Microsoft. Meanwhile, Walton's Wal-Mart stores have been making a motser selling Microsoft software and peripherals, among the many other gazillions of products flogged by Walton's retail chains.
Gates will also be taping his eyes to the back of his head with Oracle's leapin' Larry Ellison now in number three position on the rich-man list. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen takes out number six, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer came in at number 15, and direct selling guru Michael Dell slipped in at number 25. Poor guys need to pick up the slack if they want to catch up.
