Integration Briefs: AOL, Red Hat, NetIQ, CorProcure

AOL/Red Hat talks

AOL Time Warner is in talks over a potential acquisition of Red Hat, a major distributor of the open-source Linux operating system, The Washington Post has reported. America Online is said to be interested in Linux as a possible alternative to the dominant Windows operating systems of its archrival Microsoft. AOL has feuded with Microsoft in the past over issues such as the tie-in between AOL's proprietary Internet software and Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser. AOL revamped its own Netscape browser last year, amid reports that it might drop its partnership with Microsoft and use Netscape instead.

NetIQ scores ANZ deal

A recent decision made by ANZ Bank to standardise on the Windows 2000 platform has also proved a good deal for application management vendor NetIQ. NetIQ's management product, AppManager, will be rolled out across the bank's branches and offices, which by the end of the year is to be standardised on the Windows 2000 platform. ANZ has already committed to rolling out AppManager to 1300 of the bank's branch and data centre servers by January of next year. AppManager will be used to detect and correct system problems across the network.

No more corProcure?

CorProcure, a buying hub backed by the likes of BHP Billiton, Coles Myer, Qantas and Telstra, will no longer operate as a standalone business after becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia Post. CorProcure's final resting place will be as part of Australia Post's e-commerce group. The group will continue to host the buying hub for the other members, but will also use the technology to better its own procurement capabilities. "Although corProcure has achieved savings for ourselves and other corporations, we need to change aspects of its operation so it can be profitable in its own right," said Australia Post's chief financial officer, Peter Meehan.
