UNSW students win Microsoft Imagine Cup Australia finals

To represent Australia in global finals

Team Confufish Royale, consisting of a group of students from the University of New South Wales, have won the local Microsoft Imagine Cup finals and will go on to represent Australia on the global stage in Russia later this year.

The Microsoft Imagine Cup is a global tournament that brings together the brightest young minds to create a better future by using technology to solve some of the world’s toughest problems.

Team Confufish Royale was picked for its entry, Project Foodbank Local, which addresses the issue of hunger.

Project Foodbank Local connects donor agencies with food distribution centres and soup kitchens through a distribution and logistics system.

Charities and those in need are able to input their need requirements, while suppliers can input their surplus supplies into the system. It then connects the two, enabling the charities to efficiently plan for how to meet their meal demands, with the solution also providing real-time tracking of deliveries.

In addition, communities are also alerted to when help is needed in their local area and are given the option to either lend a hand and volunteer their time, or buy meals for people in their neighbourhood.

The students of Team Confufish Royale said they decided on this project as hunger is largely a hidden social problem in Australia – each year more than two million Australians rely on food relief, with around half of them being children.

The new winners have a lot to take inspiration from.

The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne has adopted 2012 winners, StethoCloud’s technology and its staff are currently being trained on the adapted stethoscope solution.

The 2013 Microsoft Imagine Cup finals will be taking place in St. Petersburg, Russia from July 8 to July 11.
