Computer theft battle gets new weapon

Business Security Systems (BSS) has launched a software solution that will help protect resellers and their clients against the cost of computer theft.

BSS's first product STOPplate, helped to easily identify stolen computers. It was designed as a deterrent to would-be thieves. The STOP (security tracking of office property) solution has been extended to include theft recovery.

"Recently we thought about a more complete service that included an active recovery service," explained managing director Gilles Novel. "We now combine prevention and recovery with both the STOPplate and STOPweb solutions."

STOPweb is a software solution that traces stolen equipment online as soon as it is connected to the Internet. It uses fingerprint technology and records an equipment profile to a central database during registration. The software can be installed on any Windows PC and will soon be available for the Macintosh platform.

"It doesn't do anything until the machine is stolen but once connected it identifies the TCP settings and call-line identification to notify the relevant departments, who then coordinate with the carrier for recovery."

Naturally, BSS is not in charge of the recovery service - that job is left to the police. The software has already proven successful in corporate environments, helping Accenture reduce its theft ratio by four.

"A lot of corporations lose notebooks," Novel said.

The company has also partnered with Allianz in a worldwide agreement to offer an insurance product designed specifically for the theft of computers.
