Electronics vendor, Sony, has showcased a full range of new products and technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 which will hit the global and local markets as the year rolls on.
While Sony has no official launch dates for the Australian market, it unveiled additions which span from Wi-Fi capability and Internet connectivity, to one-touch function, HD, 3D, 4K, and more in products such as smartphones, televisions, PCs, tablets, and digital imagining devices.
Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL smartphones
A key focus for Sony is its new Xperia Z and Xperia ZL smartphones, both of which are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core 1.5MHz processor.
The Xperia Z is Sony’s flagship model for the year, while the Xperia ZL, which is slightly smaller but thicker, will only be available in selected markets which the vendor is yet to reveal.
Each phone has a 5-inch 1080p display, a rear-facing 13-megapixel Exmor RS Mobile sensor, and a front-facing 2-megapixel camera. The main camera has a few prominent features, including intelligent auto, HDR photography, and burst mode.
Sony promises that the battery within the smartphones can power the device for up to 14 hours of 3G talk time, and three weeks standby in 3G or LTE mode. It attributes this to Battery Stamina software which switches off applications when the screen is powered down to conserve battery life.
Additionally, both devices are dust and water resistant to the IP55 and IP57 ratings. Sony said they can be submerged in up to a meter of water for 30 minutes.
Both models ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, although Sony promised that an upgrade to 4.2 will become available after launch.
No pricing was announced for the either smartphone.
One-touch function is a nifty feature based on near-field communication (NFC) which allows a simple for different products to communicate wirelessly.
In addition to the new Xperia Z and Xperia ZL smartphones, one-touch function can be found in Sony’s Blu-ray players, sound bars, wireless speakers, headphones, and mobile devices.
Sony’s new Personal Content Station is a 1TB device that consumers can use to manage content, similar to Western Digital’s My Book.
Sony began its 4K play late last year, and has announced that it will be adding two new models with 55- (XBR-55X900A) and 65-inch (XBR-65X900A) screen sizes. These will hit US shelves in spring (Australian autumn).
According to an official statement, “both deliver the same 4K resolution but at a more accessible price range.” While it may be a significant step down from the 84-inch wallet-shredder, it is safe to assume that the price tag will still tower beyond 1080p models of the same size.
4K will also be making its way into the OLED market, with Sony displaying a 56-inch prototype at CES.
In addition, Sony aims to introduce a 4K content distribution service in the US in summer for native content.
“Triluminos Display” is another talking point for televisions. “Designed to deliver truer blues, greens, and reds,” the technology will be found on selected new Sony 2K and 4K products.
