Datacentre vendor, Equinix, is increasing its global footprint with a $US39.4 million expansion of its Sydney 3 (SY3) datacentre, following the rollout of phase one, which cost $US65 million.
It recently opened phase two of the datacentre, which minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, inaugurated alongside Equinix Australia managing director, Tony Simonsen.
SY3-II is located south of Sydney and provides about 1000 cabinets across 22,927 square feet.
Once the third and final phase of SY3 is completed, the IBX will provide 72,850 square feet and capacity for 3000 cabinets.
Senator Conroy said the NBN is seen as a demand driver for Cloud services within Australia and, by extension, for Australian datacentres.
He attributed Cisco’s Global Cloud Index, which showed that by 2016, global datacentre traffic will grow nearly fourfold.
“Australian companies increasingly need to consider and adopt Cloud services in an effort to move part of their IT into a datacentre. On an international scale, companies wanting to do business in Australia can experience latency issues so we are seeing many of those making the decision to deploy at onshore datacentres in Australia.
“Cloud computing is clearly causing a dramatic change in the nature of datacentre traffic. It makes the government’s investment in the NBN credible and it is now an essential infrastructure,” Senator Conroy said.
The facility was opened six months ahead of schedule due to customer demand as a result of increased data usage and a rise in the number of companies transitioning to the Cloud, Simonsen said
Asia-Pacific is Equinix’s fastest growing region, and Simonsen claimed the expansion of itsfootprint in Australia and other Asia-Pacific markets such as Jakarta and Singapore will enable Equinix to assist multi-national customers looking to expand into the market.
“We have seen significant growth in Cloud adoption in Australia and we expect this trend to continue. Our IBXs provides the place for customers including cloud, digital content, enterprise, financial services and network providers to connect with their customers and partners,” he said.
He also added that the company will be partnering with Amazon, which recently launched its AWS Direct Connect services, to offer the service in Sydney.
With AWS Direct Connect, customers across Australia can connect their customer-owned and managed infrastructure directly to Amazon Web Services (AWS), establishing a private network connection.
Until now, Australian companies looking to connect to AWS from Australia had to do so through the public Internet.
“We realise that each customer’s Cloud journey is different. We’ve expanded our service with AWS Direct Connect for Australia to give our customers a more consistent network experience, all conveniently housed under one roof,” Simonsen said.
