Netgear's FV318 Cable/DSL VPN router allows users to initiate five VPN tunnels between authentic remote sites or mobile staff. Designed to promote uninterrupted network operation and denial-of-service attacks, the FV318 also uses remote identity authentication to secure private transmission of data.

The FV318 comes with an Ethernet cable, an integrated 8-port switch, and cable/DSL Internet access sharing capability for 20 users. This can scale to as many as 45 users. Available through Netgear distributors, the FV318 has a retail price of $2,119.

The SnapGear LITE+ was developed with Australian conditions in mind and is one of the few VPN router families that actually has Telstra and Optus broadband services listed in the setup configuration, according to the Australian-based manufacturer. Designed for small and medium companies looking for multiple office-to-office connections and telecommuter VPN functionality, the SnapGear LITE+ supports both PPTP (point-to-point tunnelling protocol) and IPSec (IP security) standards. The LITE+ features a 10/100BaseT WAN port, a 4-port 10/100BaseT switch, and a serial port that can connect to a modem as a fallback for narrowband dial-up connection. The appliance is distributed in Australia by Dovetail Distribution and has a retail price of $599.

Suited to the enterprise branch office or central site of a small or medium business, the X-Pedition Security Router 1805 (XSR-1805) is a desktop-mounted IP router with VPN functionality, firewall technology, two 10/100 Ethernet LAN interfaces, VPN hardware acceleration, and a wide selection of WAN interfaces. The XSR-1805 also offers comprehensive IP routing and quality-of-service features, according to Enterasys. In addition, the XSR-1805 offers wide-ranging management and configuration tools including command line interface, Web-based configuration and NetSight Atlas application support. Importantly, the XSR-1805 enables remote monitoring and diagnostics, critical in environments without on-site networking expertise. Distributed through Avnet Computer Marketing, the X-Pedition Security Router 1805 begins at $3,124.

The Nokia IP530 is a high-performance security appliance delivering firewall, VPN and intrusion detection systems to large enterprises. It is optimised for demanding network environments such as high-traffic e-commerce sites, corporate data warehouses, and service provider data centres. Equipped with a single-port multi-mode fibre gigabit Ethernet interface, four integrated 10/100 Ethernet ports, three standard Compact PCI slots for network interface card support, and two type II PCMCIA slots for modem support, the Nokia IP530 can integrate into any network architecture, according to Nokia. It offers a variety of connectivity options including 10/100 Ethernet, high-speed ATM, HSSI, and wide area network interfaces such as V.35/X.21 or T1/E1. The IP530 has a retail price starting from $35,363 (ex GST).

The Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrator is a family of remote access VPN appliances and client software that incorporates availability, performance and scalability with encryption and authentication. Cisco touts the range as the only scalable platform to offer field-swappable and customer-upgradable components. These components, called Scalable Encryption Processing (SEP) modules, enable users to easily add capacity and throughput. The Cisco VPN 3000 includes models to support a range of enterprise customers, from small businesses with 100 or fewer remote access users, to large organisations with up to 10,000 simultaneous remote users. The Cisco VPN Client is provided free with all versions of the VPN 3000 Series Concentrator, and includes unlimited distribution licensing. The VPN 3000 Series Concentrator products are distributed through LAN Systems, Express Data and Tech Pacific, but pricing is not

Nortel Networks

Designed for branch offices and small businesses, the Nortel Networks Contivity 600 VPN switch is a single unit that provides routing, firewall, bandwidth management, encryption, authentication and data integrity for secure tunnelling across managed IP networks and the Internet. The standalone system supports a wide range of interfaces and interoperates with existing network components such as routers, firewalls and servers. Nortel claims the product is a low-cost answer for those enterprises requiring up to 30 simultaneous tunnels. The Contivity 600 VPN is distributed by Express Data, LAN Systems and Tech Pacific. Retail pricing begins at $4,800.
