Optus introduces spending alerts system for post-paid customers

Alerts for local and travelling post-paid mobile customers, Top Up packs for additional usage coming soon

Optus has today introduced a new usage alert service for post-paid mobile customers, aiming to provide greater transparency of mobile accounts to enable better spend management.

The Optus SMS Usage Alerts, which will be sent between 7:00am and 10:00pm AEST on selected plans, will notify customers when they reach 50 per cent, 85 per cent, and 100 per cent of their voice, text, and data allowance.

"We understand our customers can get frustrated when they don’t know how much data or included value they’ve used and incur extra charges," Optus customer managing director, Vicki Brady, said.

In addition to the alerts, the telco has stated that it will send post-paid mobile customers alerts every time they spend $100 incrementally on services which are not included in their cap, such as international calls or premium SMS messages. Further, Optus customers who are travelling internationally will receive notifications once they reach their international data roaming usage thresholds.

Optus will also be introducing ‘Top Ups’ in the "near future", which provide customers with additional value and data to get through a billing period.

Available to customers through SMS, and again, only on select plans, the Top Ups will cost $5 and $10, offering $40 and $100 of standard national voice calls and texts, respectively. There are also $2, $5, and $10 data allowance packs which add 100MB, 500MB, or 1GB, respectively.

Unused Top Ups do not roll over to customers’ following bill or usage periods, the company said.
