Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip provides the performance required to bring tablets into the HD era.

The observation was made during Asus’ Transformer Infinity launch event in Sydney, where Asus showed off its new tablet that features a 1080p display and output via HDMI.

To enable the Transformer Infinity to feature “the highest resolution ever on an Android device”, Nvidia APAC Region senior tech marketing manager, Jeff Yen, says that that NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 1.6 Ghz CPU made it possible.

“It’s the world’s first ‘four plus one’ quad-core CPU with a 12-core GeoForce GPU,” he said.

Yen says that even though Tegra 2 has been on the market as recently as 2010 to 2011, the new Tegra 3 already offers graphical performance that is three times faster than its predecessor.

“The Tegra 3 is designed for the next generation of mobile games,” he said.

“It provides added realism through more dynamic lighting, physical effects and high resolution environments.”

As the world’s first mobile quad core chip, Yen says that it is positioned to make Web, gaming, apps, multitasking faster than before.

He also added that the increased processing power meant that the Tegra 3 provided a “great console experience on a mobile device” such as the Asus Transformer Infinity.

“Developers are working on making the next generation of games better with Tegra 3,” he said.

The improved performance of the Tegra 3 is not just limited to processing but also power saving.

Yen says that even with the high resolution screen, which contains 2.25x the number of pixels compared to other 10” android tablets, the Asus Transformer Infinity is able to provide up to 9.5 hours of continuous usage.

This is made possible through the 5th patented Battery Saver Core, which switches the devices to low power for active standby, music and video.

Each core is automatically enabled and disabled based on workload of the device, and the four performance cores can be engaged simultaneously for max burst when needed.

“Some processes use one or two cores while some use four,” Yen said.

“Often you just use one or a combination of cores.”

While people often think that HD video puts a big load on a device, Yen says that in actual fact it does not.

“You don’t need all four performance cores for watching HD video, but you do when you are playing games,” he said.

When it comes to the power saving performance of the Tegra 3, it provides a 61 per cent saving when watching video over a Tegra 2.

On the gaming and audio front, the Tegra 3 provides a 15 per cent saving over its predecessor.
