Andrew Barkla has joined SAP A/NZ as the new president and managing director, putting him in charge of all SAP’s business operations across the region.
Barkla comes into SAP from Unisys, where he held the role of regional vice president and general manager Asia Pacific and Japan.
As for what attracted him to the position at SAP, Barkla was impressed with how they are aiming to offer customers a “whole new” value proposition.
“New technologies such as in-memory computing and the rapid uptake of cloud and mobility solutions offers customers a new promise for the future in IT investments,” Barkla said.
“It’s a genuinely exciting time to be working in IT, and SAP is – for my money – one of the most innovative companies in enterprise IT today, and I want to be part of that.”
When asked what Barkla feels he is able to bring to the position from his past work experience, which includes stints at PeopleSoft and System Software Associates as Asia-Pacific Vice-President and General Manager, and Managing Director respectively, he picks out focus and commitment.
“I am a very externally focused leader, so an absolute focus on delivering value to our customers and a successful partner ecosystem,” he said.
“SAP has a strong commitment to building its ecosystem and pushing more revenues through its partners.”
As such, Barkla hopes that this external focus will bring a “collaborative, engaging and productive” approach when dealing with partners and providing solutions to customers.
Barkla will report to Steve Watts, President of SAP Asia-Pacific and Japan, as part of the role, and foresees himself growing the vendor’s existing strategy without shaking up things too much.
“Change is a constant in our industry, and we are building an organisation that can assist our clients to take advantage of the significant benefits to be derived from innovative and emerging technologies, such as Cloud, mobility, and SAP Hana,” he said.
“I felt that SAP is performing well, so my focus will be on growing our capabilities internally, and externally, in particular growing our channel and partner ecosystem.”
Focusing on the software vendor’s growth in A/NZ is something Barkla is looking forward to in his new role.
“This is a great team of people and I feel very privileged to be leading SAP in Australia and New Zealand.”
