Dell has expanded its Inspiron consumer portfolio with the introduction of a range of Z, R, and R Special Edition ultrabooks which are being targeted at students and families.
The Inspiron 14z and 13z, which are part of the vendor’s ‘thin and light’ range, both come with second generation Intel Core i3 processors as standard, with optional upgrades to Ivy Bridge third generation i5 or i7.
Both products offer similar specs, such as a maximum 8GB dual channel memory, HD Graphics 3000 with Sandy Bridge or 4000 with Ivy Bridge, 1366x768 standard resolution, 7.5-hour battery life, Waves MaxxAudio 3 audio and Skullcandy speakers, Intel wireless display, and connectivity options.
Apart from the enhanced screen size on the 14z, which measures in at 14-inches, with the 13z at 13.3-inches, the former comes with a 500GB HDD (13z has 320GB), upgradable to 256GB SSD. 14z also features Intel Rapid Start Technology for accelerated boot and resume.
Lenovo’s Inspiron 15R has the same processor options as the Z series. It features a 15.6-inch high definition WLED display with a 1366x768 resolution. A full HD WLED option is available, too. Additionally, it features an AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics card with 1GB GDDR3 graphics memory.
15R comes with a 500GB HDD, upgradeable to 1TB, and allows up to 8GB dual channel DDR3 RAM. It also has the same sound and connectivity options as the Z series, and is capable of a 6.5-hour battery life.
The 15R extends features to include a standard backlit keyboard, AMD Radeon HD 7730M graphics with 2GB GDDR3 graphics memory, and a 750GB HDD as standard which is upgradeable. It also comes with Ivy Bridge i5 as standard, or i7 optional. It has a 5.5-hour battery life.
The 17R Special Edition is a 17.3-inch version of the 15R Special Edition. Although it can only manage a battery life which is just shy of 4.5 hours, it offers Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics, and can support up to 2TB dual HDD.
