It had to happen. Sony Computer Entertainment will ship limited numbers of its Linux Kit for PlayStation 2 into Australia in response to repeated calls from the Linux community. The kit will allow users to run applications written for the Linux operating system as well as create original programs designed to run on Linux for the PlayStation 2 console, according to Sony. It consists of a 40GB hard disk drive, a high-speed 10/100 Base T Ethernet adapter, two Linux installation disks, and USB mouse and keyboard. It also includes a monitor adapter, for use with a standard XGA monitor with 1024 x 768 resolution. The kit will retail for $499.95. Due to the limited number of units, Sony is asking for expressions of interest for the kits before they arrive in Australia.
