Sniffer tool helps spot wireless LAN intruders

Network Associates' Sniffer Technologies division this week announced an update for its Sniffer Wireless analysis tool, adding a way to detect "rogue" devices that have joined a wireless LAN without permission.

Sniffer Wireless 2.0 does this detection automatically by comparing the list of IP and MAC addresses of authorised devices with the entire group of devices on the wireless LAN. The process enables Sniffer Wireless to spot any rogue device that may have joined the LAN without proper authorisation. With the previous version, network managers had to do this detection manually, by looking through the report, according to Rich Van De Groenekan, a senior product manager at Sniffer Technologies.

In addition to automating this process, the company also added support for the Agere Systems and Orinoco wireless cards to the new version. Previously, Sniffer Wireless supported Enterasys's RoamAbout 802.11b wireless LANs, among others.

Sniffer Wireless 2.0 costs $US7995 for a two-year subscription or $9995 for a perennial licence.
