Digital music service, Spotify, has launched in Australia.

It offers instant access to more than 16 million tracks with no limit to the device being used.

Spotify is free and already has more than 10 million users worldwide.

The company claims: "No gimmicks, no trial period, no catches – just listen and love it."

It launches with deals in place with all four major labels, APRA and a raft of independent labels.

To sign up for Spotify, users must have a Facebook account

The service is easy to use. Simply search for any artist, song or album and start playing. Create playlists, share music and check out what others are listening to.

Kicking off its local prescence, Spotify announced the launch of the Triple J app which has been specially created for Spotify users.

It showcases new tracks on Triple J Hitlist, featured albums, and includes past Hottest 100 countdowns.

The app will also feature all the latest music news.

Other music apps include TuneWiki, which lets users sing along to their favourite lyrics; Rolling Stone Recommends which delivers the latest reviews; and Songkick Concerts ,a tours app.

“We’re unbelievably excited to be here,” co-founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, said. “Australians are massive music fans and we’ve created a service that we know they’ll love.”

Spotify offers three services:

  • Spotify Free: As the name says - it's free. On-demand, buffer-free access to more than 16 million songs on your computer. No gimmicks. Manage your music files through Spotify, and sync them with your mobile or iPod. With occasional advertising. All Spotify users get unlimited free, ad-supported music.

  • Spotify Unlimited: All the special features of its free service but with uninterrupted, ad-free access to Spotify. $6.99/month.

  • Spotify Premium: Access to all the music, all the time. Listen online or offline, using device. Benefits include enhanced sound quality and access to exclusive content, competitions and special offers. $11.99/month.

Spotify Managing Director A/NZ, Kate Vale said, “Spotify is a game changer. This is a revolutionary new music service that’s free, simple, and provides lightning-fast access to one of the world’s biggest music libraries."

It was launched in Sweden in 2008 by Ek and Martin Lorentzon, out of a desire to develop a better, more convenient and legal alternative to music piracy.
