Optus to sell water-resistant pre-paid phone

Motorola Defy Mini will sell through Optus for $199

Optus will sell the Motorola Defy Mini in Australia, a dust-proof, water-resistant and scratch-resistant smartphone.

The Motorola Defy Mini is available now through Optus pre-paid for $199. It is a smaller, cheaper version of the original Defy and the Defy+ and aims to bring a "life-proof" smartphone to the entry level segment of the market.

"Motorola DEFY MINI is just the right mix of style, value, performance and toughness," said Timo Brouwer, Motorola Mobility's managing director for Australia and New Zealand. "It can stand up to whatever your busy life throws at it, keep you connected and organised and capture and share your once-in-a-lifetime adventures, all with resilience and style."

Traditionally, ruggedised mobiles in Australia have been reserved for low-end feature phones rather than fully fledged smartphones. The Defy Mini is not completely waterproof but it is described as water resistant and can handle being submerged in up to a metre of water.

The Motorola Defy Mini has a 3.2-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels, is powered by a 600MHz processor, has 512MB of RAM and comes with a microSD card slot for memory expansion. Motorola says the Defy Mini's 1650mAh battery will provide up to 10 hours of talk time.

The Motorola Defy Mini runs the 2.3 Gingerbread version of Google's Android platform, has a 3-megapixel camera with single LED flash and a front-facing VGA camera for video calling. Due to its positioning as a budget pre-paid handset, the Defy Mini isn't likely to be upgraded to the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android.

The Motorola Defy Mini is available on Optus pre-paid for $199 and comes with $30 worth of credit and an Optus SIM card. Motorola will also sell the Defy Mini through retailers Dick Smith, while Kmart and Target stores will stock the phone from Monday 21 May.
