Melbourne-based value-added distributor, Techplus, has hired Chris Barton as its general manager.
This follows the acquisition of the Techplus by New Zealand-based distributor, Connector Systems earlier this month.
The general manager position is a newly created role.
Barton is the former regional manager of Asia-Pacific for Internet security vendor, Clearswift. He has also worked for other IT security companies such as SonicWall and Sophos.
According to Barton, he formed a relationship with Connector Systems through his role at Clearswift.
“For the last 14 or so years I have worked within the channel largely from the vendor perspective in Australia,” he told ARN. “Being able to offer some insight within the business from a vendor standpoint while also having a good knowledge of the channel is something that really interest me and I look forward to working with the Techplus business.”
Barton will be working closely with Techplus managing director, Paul Kern, to grow the company.
“It’s a case of us both leveraging each other’s expertise and knowledge,” he said.
The Connector Systems acquisition has already brought more vendors into the value-added distributor’s portfolio with the most recent one being Ruckus Wireless. Both Kern and Barton have plans to bring more of the vendor relationships from Connector Systems in New Zealand into the business in Australia.
Barton also hopes to push Techplus into having a more nationwide presence.
“Techplus has historically been a Victoria-focused business although it had some dealings outside of the state,” he said. “We’ve come on board to set up an office in Sydney already, making a few appointments on the way, and we will continue to do so to get a better representation across Australia.”
Connector Systems managing director, Dale Smith, has high hopes for Barton and said he was a key component to the distributor’s push into the Australian market.
“Chris brings a wealth of industry experience and we couldn’t be more pleased to have him join our Techplus/Connector Systems team,” Smith said in a statement.
