Now you don’t have to lug around a thick and heavy physical version of the dictionary. The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD) is now available as a very handy app.

It provides you with the full list of A-Z words in the dictionary, British and American pronunciation of words, customisation preferences and the ‘did you mean’ functionality in case you do not know the right spelling of a word – amongst other capabilities.

The ‘My View’ option enables you to choose how much information you want on your screen – for example, you can choose to hide images, include synonyms, hide example sentences, etc. You can also customise the app appearance to suit your style.

It has integrated history capabilities for the last 100 words searched, as well as the ability to create your own list of favourite words.

It also has a link to the Thesaurus to give you access to a wider range of word options.

This app was reviewed on a HTC Velocity 4G.

Pros: Offers you the entire dictionary in an app.

Cons: It’s a bit pricy; some other options offer you the same service at a lower price.

Verdict: Perfect for avid readers and those who use the dictionary on a daily basis.
