Hardware vendors HP and Acer have separately announced new channel sales incentives based on the coming Indy 300 and Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix car racing events.
HP is bringing back its “Start your engines” promotion for server and storage products to coincide with the F1 Grand Prix being held in March 2003.
Last year the promotion saw HP reward its top ten sales representatives from second tier channel partners by taking them on an all expenses paid trip to the Grand Prix. Angus Jones, marketing manager for industry standard servers, said the program was successful in increasing sales for the vendor, so this year it will be extended considerably.
Firstly, it will be offered to reps from both tier one and tier two resellers. Second, the incentives have been adjusted so as to appeal to sales reps that are not necessarily interested in motor sport. While the trip to the Grand Prix includes pit tours and privileges not available to the general public, the vendor wants to attract a wider group of participants.
The competition will be divided into three stages: pre-qualifying (6th Oct – 31st Oct), qualifying (1st Nov – 31st Dec) and race stage (1st Jan – 13th Feb). For every sale of a selected Industry Standard Server product, or StorageWorks products and HP Services each registered channel sales person will be awarded “race points”. The top cumulative point scorers for each stage will be given the option of either a trip to the Grand Prix or prizes to the value of $5,000 each. Second prize in each stage will win an 80cm Television, and third a home entertainment system.
Jones said the competition was split into three stages to make sure all channel partners had a chance to enter and win prizes. “Last year was run over two months and by the time some reps found out about it, it was almost over,” he said.
Also revving up on the motor sport theme is PC vendor Acer, who is providing wireless connectivity to the crews during October’s Indy 300 on the Gold Coast. Acer is giving channel partners a chance to win a holiday for two to the event with exclusive access to Acer’s Chicane Luxury Suite, flights and accommodation. To be eligible, Acer channel reps are asked to enter the serial number of any Acer TravelMate with Centrino mobile technology sold on the Acer web site and describe in 20 words or less how “Acer and Intel Centrino mobile technology has wired your life.”
