CBA CIO to be ACS ambassador for 2012
According to ACS CEO, Alan Patterson, ambassadors are ICT professionals who have reached the pinnacle of their profession.
Their contribution to the field, which has increased its recognition, is the reason for their recognition as ambassadors, he said.
“As industry professionals, it is important for us all to actively encourage more young people to see IT as an exciting career,” said Harte. “They have the opportunity to work in almost any industry, from entertainment to social media.”
Harte was awarded CIO of the year 2011 at the national iAwards, and has been recognised for his contribution in ICT, operations, customer service, and corporate social responsibility.

WD acquires Hitachi Global Storage Technologies
Storage vendor, Western Digital (WD), has acquired hard drive manufacturer, Viviti Technologies (formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies), for $US3.9 billion in cash and 25 million shares of Western Digital Common stock (WDC) valued at about $US0.9 billion.
The new WD will operate with WD and Viviti Technologies as wholly owned subsidiaries.
As part of the agreement, Viviti Technologies will own approximately 10 per cent of WDC shares outstanding and has the right to designate two individuals to WD’s board of directors.
Former WD CEO, John Coyne, will head up the new office as CEO.
Steve Milligan will serve as company president, Tim Leyden as chief operating officer and Wolfgang Nickl as chief financial officer.
Coyne said that the acquisition has enabled the company to build upon the new WD, launching a broader product portfolio encompassing deep technology capability and revamping its execution strategies.
“The two subsidiaries will compete in the marketplace with separate brands and product lines while sharing common values of customer satisfaction, value creation, consistent profitability and growth,” he said.
Coyne’s first point of focus is to obtain a strong presence in the traditional enterprise market, especially within the Cloud and mobility space. “We want to address new market initiatives such as enterprise Solid State Drive (SSD), storage solutions for small business and low-profile Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and hybrid drives for Ultrabooks,” he added.

Meru and Wavelink expand offerings in Australia
Virtualisation vendor, Meru Networks, and its Australian distributor since 2009, Wavelink, are extending Meru’s range of offerings to Australian enterprises. The move is part of Meru’s global growth strategy.
Meru and Wavelink will expand into the region with the addition of a dedicated team of Meru technical sales professionals comprising territory account managers and sales engineers.
The team will work with end-customers in the design and implementation of Meru virtualised wireless WLANs.
“Working together, we will jointly deliver solutions across the key vertical industries in Australia,” Meru Networks vice-president of international sales, David Kelly, said.
Wavelink’s existing resellers in Melbourne and Sydney will co-sell Meru WLAN solutions and lead network implementations. Wavelink will also extend engineering and inside sales support out of the Sydney office.
“They will assist the channel partners in developing opportunities and work with them on existing opportunities with a customer focus in growing the Meru business in Australia,” Wavelink managing director, Ilan Rubin, said.
It aims to target markets within education, healthcare, enterprise, government and hospitality with its range of virtualised WLAN solutions.
Rubin stated that Wavelink’s existing partners and new partners that it is in discussions with will benefit from the deal.
He also said that Wavelink is anticipating a revenue growth of 50 per cent for this coming year as a result of the offering.
“It means that we would have higher reach into the market and greater enablement of closer partnership with our key channel partners. Eventually, developing their business and developing ours as a consequence,” he added.

Macquarie Telecom employs partners for IC2
Telecommunications company, Macquarie Telecom (ASX: MAQ), has partnered with Australian IT firms Server Racks Australia (SRA) and Syndeticom Electrical & Communications to implement server rack and cabling solutions for its flagship Intellicentre 2 (IC2) datacentre in Macquarie Park, Sydney.
As part of the agreement, SRA will deliver advanced server racks and containment in IC2’s cooling strategy for clients.
Syndeticom will provide CommScope/Systimax core cabling for IC2 as well as installation and support for the life of the facility. Macquarie will also use its CableSolve Infrastructure Management software system.
According to Macquarie Telecom, it selected both firms as it wanted to partner with Australian IT providers with world-class quality service levels.
“Macquarie Telecom firmly believes in the value of supporting local vendors for key assets in its datacentres. We selected them based on a stringent process focusing on flexible design and long-term reliability of product,” Macquarie Telecom managing director of hosting, Aidan Tudehope, said.
The company already employs SRA products in a number of other locations, but submitted the vendor to a competitive tender process when evaluating it as a candidate for IC2.
Macquarie Telecom also recently announced News Limited and Ninefold as anchor tenants for its $60 million IC2 datacentre in North Ryde and is currently seeking additional anchor tenants for IC2.

SafeNet acquires Cryptocard to expand Cloud capabilities
Information security company, SafeNet has acquired Cloud-based authentication solutions vendor, Cryptocard, with the aim of broadening its authentication and Cloud-based services, and expanding its authentication portfolio.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
By combining its ‘Fully Trusted Authentication Solutions’ with Cryptocard’s Blackshield Cloud platform, SafeNet is able to provide customers with access to on-premise and as-a-service solutions.
Cryptocard’s platform will provide an opportunity for mobile and telecom service providers and system integrators to introduce Authentication-as-a-Service (AaaS) solutions to their end-users.
“Both enterprise and government customers are demanding solutions that protect and control data and identifies across networks, mobile devices and to and from the Cloud,” SafeNet APAC vice-president, Humphrey Chan, said.
“By joining forces and engaging SafeNet’s global scale, we are positioned to help customers accelerate the migration to and from the Cloud in a secure and cost-effective manner.”
The merging of the company’s product and service offerings means that customers will be able to deploy customised authentication strategies with greater flexibility and reduced cost.

WatchGuard’s Elite 2012 competition for partners and resellers
Security solutions vendor, WatchGuard Technologies has launched its Elite 2012 partner and reseller competition.
The competition, which is now in its third year, evaluates qualifying A/NZ companies on sales growth and performance from October 2011 to September 2012.
Elite 2012 symbolises the introduction of a new category to recognise individual sales performance as to expand the range of partners able to participate.
“Elite 2012 recognises our capability to work with the channel in delivering solutions that enables customers to realise exceptional returns on their WatchGuard investment,” WatchGuard channels and alliance APAC vice-president, Scott Robertson, said.
Winners from different categories within WatchGuard’s northern and southern regions become a part of the vendor’s Elite Club, and are awarded resort packages.
“Members of the Elite Club are rewarded with a trip for four days and three nights to a destination which we will announce later this year,” he said.

Inpex deploys OpenText software for invoicing processes
Oil and gas exploration and production company, Inpex is deploying OpenText’s Vendor Invoice Management for use with SAP Solutions (VIM) as to improve its purchase order and invoicing processes within Australia.
The pre-packaged application will work in combination with Inpex’s existing software to accelerate creation, management, and routing of invoices and orders, delivering efficiency benefits for the company’s supplier and staff.
The deployment will include VIM for secure browser-based access, and OpenText Invoice Capture Centre for SAP Solutions (ICC), a software that automates the capture and extraction process.
“With such large and complex projects on the go, it is important that we ensure operational efficiencies wherever possible,” Inpex CIO, Chris Foley, said.
“With this in mind, we wanted a solution that would allow us to optimise invoice management processes, while maximising the return on our existing investment with SAP.”

Gartner Magic Quadrant adds Sophos to leaders
Sophos’ UTM promises to eliminate the complexity of deploying and managing a variety of point solutions to secure businesses against viruses, spam and hackers.
Recently, the vendor introduced UTM Cloud capabilities via the Amazon virtual private cloud (VPC), enabling customers to easily host and run server infrastructure.
“Our goal is to provide complete security solutions that allow organisations to protect their expanding networks while simplifying security management,” Sophos network security senior vice-president, Jan Hichert, said.
The UTM quadrant is based on an assessment of a company’s ability to execute, and completeness of vision.
