Motorola Droid Xyboard tablets to hit Verizon this month

Two new Droid Xyboard tablet computers that use the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will go on sale later this month.

Prices start at $429.99 for the 16GB Droid Xyboard 8.2 and $529.99 for the 16GB Droid Xyboard 10.1. Both require a two-year Verizon agreement, and buyers must purchase a data plan starting at $30 a month for 2GB of data.

The two devices, from Motorola Mobility, run Android 3.2, but will be upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0, at some point. Each is lighter than a paperback book, Verizon said in a statement, although it did not offer exact weight or dimensions. Both come with dual-core 1.2GHz processors and 1GB of RAM.

The larger model, with a 10.1-in. touchscreen, comes with stylus for input. Corning Gorilla Glass is used to keep both touchscreens scratch-resistant.

Each version includes a 5-megapixel rear-facing high-definition camera and a 1.3 megapixel high-definition front-facing cameras for video chat.

Verizon said that where LTE coverage is available, users can get 5Mbps to 12Mbps data downloads speeds and 2Mbps to 5Mbps upload speeds.

Verizon didn't announce a specific date when the devices will go on sale, saying only that they would be available in December.

Verizon also plans to debut the Droid Razr smartphone from Motorola in white sometime this month. It will sell for $299.99 and be subject to a two-year agreement that requires a talk plan starting at $40 a month and a data plan starting at $30 a month for 2GB of data.

Verizon also said that customers will get $100 off a Droid Xyboard tablet and $50 off some Motorola accessories for a limited time when a customer buys a Droid Razr with a new two-year contract.
