Accolades recognises the winners at this year's ARN IT Industry Awards - the best of the best. ARN’s newest award category recognises the increased importance the telecommunications industry is playing in a modern IT environment of Cloud and other hosted services. The crossover between telecommunications and the traditional IT channel is significant now, and encompasses providers (vendor), technology distributors and resellers. The Best Telecommunications Initiative Award went to a telco that has developed its own in-house R&D facility.
With a wealth of experience in the telco industry and a strong commitment to the channel, it seems apt that BigAir should win the first ARN Award for Telco Vendor of the Year.
The wireless broadband operator was listed on the ASX in 2006 and launched its commercial WiMax network across Sydney and Melbourne the following year.
BigAir is now one of the leading fixed wireless broadband service providers for businesses and campuses right across Australia. While a number of industry observers have questioned the viability of WiMax, BigAir did not give up on the technology. The company obviously has no regrets since it continues to post good profits year after year. In January, it moved in to take over competitor, Clever Communications.
One of BigAir’s proudest qualities is its appreciation of channel partners.
“We are very channel focused; we are completely dependant on the channel as our major sales strategy,” BigAir CEO, Jason Ashton, said. “Part of that is to secure partners to grow our business since we don’t really have a direct sales strategy.”
Aside from its channel love, Ashton saw his company’s service-driven culture as a big contributor to its ARN Award victory.
“We try to think outside the box when it comes to customer requirements,” he said. “We often build new networks for partners to enable them to service their customers.”
Often BigAir is asked to build new networks on very short notice but it responds swiftly to meet the need of channel partners. “The types of services we are offering are quite unique with the nature of the technology being wireless,” Ashton said.
“We are able to deliver services quickly and to meet the technology requirements which cannot be done with traditional legacy fixed-line networks.”
BigAir is proud to be recognised for its efforts in the telco space and the ARN Award now has pride of place in the company’s reception room, he said.
