Nokia N900 gets Ice Cream Sandwich, melts under pressure

A hacker roots the Nokia N900 to run Ice Cream Sandwich, but the phone gets a little bit of brain freeze in the process.

Ever since the beginning of time (or at least since 2008 or so), hackers and developers have worked nonstop to get Android running on all sorts of devices, and we see this continuing now that Ice Cream Sandwich is on its way. Now we can add another device to the list of gadgets that have been Androidified: the Nokia N900.

The root undertaken by developer Drunkdebugger shows Ice Cream Sandwich running on an older Nokia smartphone. Details on this hack are somewhat scant, but we know that he used the NITdroid Project (bringing Android to Nokia) to help. Drunkdebugger says that the hack is in "pre-pre-alpha", so it's probably not something you'll want to try just yet.

This warning is just as well, because while the lock screen looks and works fine, once you begin using the phone, the software seems to be a little glitchy. Although it's an alpha, it will be interesting to see how this hack improves over the next couple of months. Check out the video to see the Androidified N900 in action.
