Independent retail buying group Leading Edge Computers has cemented a direct reseller relationship with Acer Computers, following the latter's move to a one-tier distribution model.
Leading Edge has become one of Acer's key national resellers and will help strengthen Acer in the retail segment.
"We've had Acer on our shelves, but in the past we've dealt with a distributor," said Leading Edge Computers general manager Ross Whitelaw. "When the offer came to deal with Acer on a direct basis, we couldn't say no. We have always had an affinity with Acer - they have a very strong global presence in manufacturing."
The deal with Acer is a separate agreement to the group's OEM PC supply arrangement with Optima, which was placed under review in July.
"We are still going with Optima, we haven't made a move to another supplier, primarily because of the uncertainty in the market," Whitelaw said.
The deal with Acer takes in the vendor's branded PC and notebook range, but Leading Edge still buys its peripherals through a distributor.
The new arrangement has also opened the door for Leading Edge members to become Acer service centres. "Our whole offer is built on doing the service on the machines that we sell, so most members have applied for that," Whitelaw said.
