Dr Who Encyclopedia
Cost: $7.49 | Developer: Random House Group | Platform: iOS (iPad only) | Version: 4.3 | 257 MB |
Yes, that isn’t a typo up the top, this is an Encyclopedia that is 257MB in size. The reason it is such a big download is that it’s a definitive resource for the modern Dr Who.
The base download has all the background and biographies around the eleventh Dr Who doctor (as in, Matt Smith). In-App purchases (also $7.49 a piece) features similarly comprehensive detail on the tenth (David Tennant, i.e. the best Who ever), and ninth (Christopher Eccleston).
Within the app, which is a gorgeous interactive experience, are interactive entries on the major characters, links to episodes, A-Z coverage of the best Who episodes, enemy information, places and photo galleries. There’s also links to episode previews in iTunes, allowing you to easily purchase anything that takes your fancy.
It’s a little pricey, but Who fans are going to lap this up; there’s 3028 articles within the app if you’ve purchased everything (the initial download, the eleventh Doctor, features 832 articles). The only real criticism I have is that because the application is so graphic-intensive, there are loading times as you navigate around. For a data resource this is a little frustrating.
With any luck future updates will bring the first eight doctors into the encyclopedia as well.
Pros: Looks great and has all the information on Dr Who that a fan could want.
Cons: Only features the three most recent Doctors, and buying all three is going to set you back $22.50
Verdict: Dr. Who fans are going to be able to justify the asking price quite easily.
