TechOne posts profits

ASX-listed software developer Technology One will be pleasing its shareholders this month after recording revenues of $21.3 million (up 24 per cent), EBITDA of $5.9 million (up 29 per cent), and net profit after tax of $3.9 million (up 20 per cent) for the half-year to December 2001. The six months saw the developer win new contracts with several councils (Mackay City, Great Lakes, Sutherland Shire and Bendigo City) and several government departments (Local Government Association of Queensland, Lower Murray Region Water Authority, and the Department of Justice and Industrial Relations).

BEA to unify WebLogic

BEA Systems is taking steps to unify the various products that comprise its WebLogic platform. Besides its flagship application server, BEA's products include a portal server, an integration server and its forthcoming Workshop developer framework. By mid-year, the company plans to release WebLogic Platform 7.0, which will let customers buy and install those products in a single suite for the first time. BEA is also standardising toolbars and other features to create a familiar environment for users across its products. Presenting a unified platform is important for BEA as it does battle with rivals IBM, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.

Macromedia overhauls Flash Web app tool

Macromedia has unveiled the newest version of its tools for building Web applications, called Flash MX. Macromedia is positioning Flash MX as an application development environment for building rich Web-based applications rather than just a tool for creating animation clips at Web sites, a stigma that attached itself to the technology as it found acceptance among developers in the early days of the Web. The goal is to position Flash as a technology that can be used to build applications that users can interact with over the Internet, such as an order form on a Web site.
